Papers, 1858-1883.

This collection contains photocopies of ten letters, dated 1858-1883, of the Chapman family. The collection includes prewar letters between Giles Chapman and his parents, wartime letters from Chapman to his wife, and several poignant letters written after Giles' death between his widow and his father, Samuel Chapman. The collection also includes a copy of a special order for Giles Chapman, dated 1865.

Giles P. Chapman was born in South Carolina. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was farming with his wife Martha and several children in Sumter County, Florida. His parents still resided in South Carolina. In May 1862, Chapman enlisted in the Marion Dragoons, which later became Company C, Second Florida Cavalry Regiment. He was discharged for disability in December of that same year and died in November 1863 from measles complications. His wife apparently moved back to Newberry, South Carolina...
